Comprehensive English Regents Examinations
Review the sample student paragraphs and essays provided by the state (pay particular attention to the paragraphs scored a "2" and the scores for the critical lens essays-note the comments listed at the end of each essay).
Practice answering the multiple choice questions for the passages, prior to taking a "peek" at the answer key.

Sunday, December 30, 2012

Dear Parents: Several students from each class are neglecting to bring their A Streetcar Named Desire text to class. Perhaps, your child is one of these "neglectful" students who will receive a "0" for coming to class unprepared. Soon, immediately after we complete the remaining scenes from the play, your child will be administered an "open-book" assessment in the form of AP Style Multiple Choice Questions. If your child neglects to bring this required text, your child will not be permitted to complete the assessment at this time. Furthermore, since other students will be sharing answers/questions with each other after class, your child will then be given a "different" and perhaps, much more difficult assessment tool that will be completed during our 37.5 minutes tutorial session.  A SPECIAL NOTE TO STUDENTS: DO NOT ASK PERMISSION TO GO TO YOUR LOCKER TO RETRIEVE YOUR TEXT-PERMISSION TO DO SO WILL BE DENIED!
Kindly use the following link to "Create a New Student Account" on turnitin
Class ID: 5905318

This is mandatory for ALL students-you are "enrolling" yourself...

A Concern: Too many students have not properly cited the 50 word summaries using MLA. Please note the resources posted below. Amazingly, several students merely inserted the "url"-in fact-students have neglected to include the title of the resource. You must remember to include the title of the publication/journal/magazine/news source, etc. I also find it rather peculiar that students from a particular band actually selected the identical article to "summarize" when there are a countless number of links that I have provided that will yield "thousands" of resources. You must randomly select resources not previously visited. THINK: Occasion-Audience-Purpose-Subject... Furthermore, you were instructed NOT to select the TWO articles for summarization from the same publication-yet, ...!

Friday, December 28, 2012

Wonderful...Wonderful...Wonderful...Wonderful...NEWS!
Turnitin.com is ready for use! I will inform you of the process when you return-just in-time for the submission of your research paper on Gender Roles.

Just a reminder: 2 50 word summaries due on Thursday, 3 January (Check-out the additional resources I recently posted on this blog-you may have to click-on "Older Posts" to locate these resources. (NOTE the repetition of the word "resources"...)

As usual, SAT Vocabulary Quiz: List 12 on Friday, 4 January. Do not forget to review the words from List 11.
"Unpacking a text"? You may experience an epiphany while "examining" these slides. While doing this, think of how this information will help you in the "reading" of both fiction and non-fiction text. (Application to what we "do" with a text in AP L and C and in what you must "do" with a text (passage) on the SAT.) By the way, you will probably have a surprise quiz on the content of this presentation-sometime after you submit your research paper.
"The answers you get from literature depend upon the questions you pose."
Margaret Atwood

Why would Diedrich post this quote?
Please Note: For the past two years, your teacher has administered the "parts" of this examination as a "Periodic Assessment".

A Concern...
With three "mini-assignments" due on Tuesday, 18 December, approximately 20 "individuals" have opened (viewed) the links-as of the time of this post-for The Philosophy of Education and for Arts and Letters Daily! Why wait until the last minute? Soon, you will no longer be given several days to complete an assignment.
See post below to refresh your memory for what is due on Tuesday, 18 December.

If you do not enter the class with your copy of A Streetcar Named Desire you will NOT be permitted to join a group for the class activity. Why is it ALWAYS the same students who enter the class without the required text? Amazingly, several students have not maintained the required binder which will be checked this week-NO EXCUSES-I know who you are-you are not "fooling" anyone.

SAT Vocabulary Quiz-List 11 (SEVEN words from List 11 and THREE words from List 10) on Friday, 21 December. If you plan on being absent, take the quiz on Thursday, 20 December during 37.5 minutes.
PSAT Results:
If your class does not meet on Monday, 17 December-drop by Room 404 to obtain your printed results and testing booklet. I have already posted the results for "Critical Reading" and for "Writing Skills" on Jupiter. I urge you to share your results with your parents.

Thursday, December 13, 2012

PSAT Results:
At approximately 1000 hrs on Thursday, 13 December , I was informed by the Testing Coordinator in the College Office that the results for my classes will not be available until Monday, 17 December. Please be patient! Immediately upon receiving your scores, I will post them on Jupiter-then distribute the paper copy to you. If your class does not meet on Mondays, you are welcome to drop by Room 404 to receive your copy.

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

BE ADVISED: I have previously posted a statement that informs students that they MAY NOT re-take a test/quiz and/or "revise" an assignment for the sole purpose of improving their grade. I will welcome your visit to discuss what needed to be done in order for you to receive a "higher" grade. (See below for a previous" post regarding this-you will probably encounter more than one...I have also repeated this policy in class on more than one occasion.)

Please see me during 37.5 minutes prior to an assignment's due date with a copy of the assignment in your hand-I will then give you "feedback" (suggestions) on what could be done to improve your score on that assignment. (For example, you have THREE "mini-assignments" due on Tuesday, 18 December. If you desire assistance, visit me on Thursday, 13 December and/or on Monday, 17 December-first-come-first served.) Once the assignment is submitted, you will NOT be able to "Do it over for a higher grade".

The Philosophy of Composition (MP3)  Poe
(Once on the site, click on "MP3")

The Philosophy of Composition (text) Edgar Allan Poe

(Download and Print)

The Raven

Assignment: DUE TUESDAY, 18 DECEMBER ("Yes, I am aware that you have another assignment due on the same day...")

After reading, The Philosophy of Composition, summarize Poe's philosophy in one hundred words. You may want to download and print The Raven-place it next to Poe's essay as you read and/or follow along with the audio recording.

Art and Letters Daily
"I wonder why Diedrich posted this link?"

Recall, what I shared with you previously about building a "knowledge" base in preparation for Question 3 (DCQ) on the AP Examination?

Beginning the week of 17 December, you will submit TWO 50 WORD SUMMARIES EVERY TUESDAY on subjects/topics/issues from journals/magazines. (Click on link posted above.) You must VARY the issue each and every week. Your summary should include-occasion-purpose-audience-context/subject. (I will NOT accept summaries exceeding the 50 word requirement.)

MANDATORY MLA CITATION for each summary. (Refer to posts on citing according to MLA.)
Homework Assignment Due Thursday, 13 December:

A Streetcar Named Desire Scene 2 Writing Assignment

As usual, SAT Vocabulary Quiz on Friday, 14 December (List 10-SEVEN words/List 9-THREE words)

Monday, December 10, 2012

NOTE: If I am ever absent from school, I expect you to complete the assignment that I have left with the substitute. I will grade this work-if you are marked absent from class-you will be required to complete this assignment during 37.5 minutes-therefore-it is advisable that you do not "cut" the class...just show-up and complete the work that is left.

Thank you!

Sunday, December 9, 2012

Schedule for Week of 10 December:

Bring your copy of A Streetcar Named Desire to class everyday, unless told otherwise. Do not ask for permission to go to your locker to retrieve it-if you arrive to class unprepared-you will receive a "zero". Parents: Perhaps your child is one of the several students from each class who always arrive unprepared and then must go to their locker to obtain their text-imagine a "Junior" neglecting to bring the required text to class? I will remember this when I am requested to write their college letter of recommendation...

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Just a Reminder: SAT Vocabulary Quiz-List 9 on Friday, 7 December (SEVEN words from List 9 and THREE words from List 8)

Monday, December 3, 2012

BE ADVISED: I have previously posted a statement that informs students that they MAY NOT re-take a test/quiz and/or "revise" an assignment for the sole purpose of improving their grade. I will welcome your visit to discuss what needed to be done in order for you to receive a "higher" grade. (See below for a previous" post regarding this-you will probably encounter more than one...I have also repeated this policy in class on more than one occasion.)

Friday, November 30, 2012

Monday, November 26, 2012

Please Note: I will "gladly" assist you with any assignment prior to the due date. However, once that assignment is turned-in, I will NOT permit you to revise that assignment during 37.5 minutes tutoring session in order for you to improve your grade. To put it simply, "NO DO-OVERS!" You had that opportunity prior to the submission of the assignment.

Amazingly, several students are NOT completing the homework assignments-you have ample opportunity and time to do so. Do not place a past-due assignment in any folder on my desk! Furthermore, I am disappointed with the quality of the assignments being submitted-you are in an AP class- so naturally- I expect college-level work!

Dear Parents: A grade of an "85" is a "good" grade to receive in an Advanced Placement class! This is NOT a "regular/general" English class-adjustments can be made if your child receives a "4" or a "5" on the AP exam-but for now-commend your child for receiving an "85".

(Another source with audio/ppt-you will need flash-player click on the title of this post.)

Monday, November 12, 2012

A Reminder:
If you are absent on a day when an assignment is due, you are required to email me that assignment on the day it is due (not later that day) and then upon your return-as you enter the classroom-you are to hand me a "hard" copy of that assignment. Do not attempt to place an overdue assignment in your class folder on my desk. Recall-I DO NOT ACCEPT PAST-DUE ASSIGNMENTS-HOWEVER, FOR THIS MARKING PERIOD ONLY-I WILL PERMIT YOU TO MAKE-UP A MISSED QUOTATION/PARAGRAPH ASSIGNMENT DURING 371/2 MINUTES ONLY-UNDER MY SUPERVISION-IT MUST BE WRITTEN AT THAT TIME.

In addition, if you are absent on a day an SAT Vocabulary Quiz is given-you will only be given two days to make-up that quiz.

Realizing that many of you are eager to get started reading the sources I have provided for the writing of your research paper on "Defining Femininity", I will "simply" your task by informing you of a "strategy" that will offer assistance in the writing of your thesis statement.
To develop a working thesis or hypothesis, read at least six to eight sources (8-10 will be required sources to list in your Works Cited Page) to examine the argument(s) inherent in each text (source) so that you can refine your idea so that your paper will have a clear focus on Gender Roles: Defining Femininity. Next, you must then locate sources which share your argument/thesis that you have identified-using the sources that I have generated.

Annotations of Trends CHART
(Use this as you read your sources...)
A Tip from Diedrich: Turn the turn the chart "vertically" (the text will now be near your right=hand) to record the information listed under the column headed "Which SOURCE(S)...".

Schedule for Week of 12 November

The Story of X (A Fabulous Child's Story-see link below) response due Tuesday-recall my instructions-"So, what?" or if that puzzles you think reflection/reaction NOT a rhetorical analysis! (Approx. 1 1/2 pages)

Please be informed that I received a memo on Friday afternoon (11/9) that the College Now representatives would visit our classes on Tuesday (11/13). You will still take the SAT Vocabulary Quiz (List 7-seven words/List 6-three words)
Please complete your reading of The Great Gatsby by Thursday, 11/15.
ATTENTION G-Band Students: Your textbook is not required on Tuesday, 11/13.
NOTE: I was extremely pleased with the discussions that took place for Professions for Women: we will continue to discuss Woolf's speech later in the week. I realize that for all of us sitting in a classroom-academically engaged- with so much disruption in our lives is not an easy task. Please remember what I said about homework assignments-just speak to me privately or send an email.
My compilation of the sources for your "Mini-argumentative Research Paper" has been completed. (Approximately 50% "borrowed" from a college Sociology 101 class-the rest I located and reviewed on my own.) You will discover that the list of resources is quite extensive. All the links to your sources are "active"-I verified by clicking on the link for each source.
Several of the sources are intended as a background on Gender and Socialization-amazingly, they are all an "interesting" read. You will have to locate these on your own-just "scroll" until you locate the sources that will yield this information.
Your focus: Defining Femininity-We will discuss how to "narrow" this broad topic this week. You will use the "essential question" that begins this chapter as a guide: What is the impact of the gender roles that society creates and enforces? I will inform you of the specific requirements (number of pages and number of sources) by Thursday, 11/15.

Monday, November 5, 2012

SAT Vocabulary Quiz: List 7 (seven words list 7 and three words list 6)  will be given on Tuesday, 13 November.

A REMINDER: THE 24-HOUR RULE-Once you are given the opportunity to review a graded-written response-carefully examining my responses-asking classmates to read their written responses (those classmates receiving a "higher" grade)-then going home and re-reading the assigned text, you may then approach me to arrange a writing conference. This was made clear from the beginning of the semester! In addition, several of you do not quite understand the "effectiveness" of this directive.  Regrettably, many of you have not visited the AP English Language and Composition Home Page to review the "Sample Student Essays".

SEVERAL STUDENTS ARE STILL INSISTING THAT ENDING A BODY PARAGRAPH WITH A SPECIFIC QUOTE FROM THE TEXT IS ACCEPTABLE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! Do not attempt to "argue" with me that this is permissible! It is not acceptable-recall your English 9 Writing Unit?

Integrating Quotes

Wednesday, 7 November: Language of Composition textbook NOT required. Introduction to Gender Roles Unit (see Chapter 8 of text) and related posts on this blog.

Thursday, 8 November: ALL BANDS- Bring your Language of Composition textbook to class.

Sunday, November 4, 2012

ATTENTION: If you arrive early to school early on Monday, you are welcome to visit me in Room 404 to use the computers. Since many of you know I usually stay late, you are welcome to do the same-if necessary-I will open up Room 402-the computer room. Please spread the word since many of your classmates may not have electricity and/or access to a computer.
Monday, 5 November

G-Band: Do not bring your textbook-just bring yourself to class.

HW: TBA (Please do not fret about this class-you will be prepared for the NYS English Regents and the AP Language and Composition exam-do not worry about completing the work-we will work together on the assignments-we will work together on attempting to endure the disruption that the hurricane has caused in all of our lives...)
Take the Gender Traits Test
NOTE: You are NOT being asked anything that would/should result in embarrassment. This is about GENDER!

The Language of Composition: Chapter 3 Terms (Quizlet)
Dear Parents: On Thursday, your child will receive a report cart at the end of B-Band. Please be advised that the "letter-grade" indicated will not reflect an accurate "grade" since grades were not "rounded-up" to the nearest whole-grade. However, if you visit the school's on line-grading report (jupitergrades.com) you will discover your child's "actual" numerical grade for the first-marking period. This numerical grade WILL be averaged with the grade your child earns for the second-marking period. If you do not have your OWN password (not your child's), please contact the LMGHS Parent Coordinator. When we meet this week, I will give you a print-out for grades and assignments your child completed this marking-period.
Schedule for Week of 22 October

NOTE: I am no longer accepting assignments hand-written! Word-process (type) all assignments. Printers are located throughout the building-do not wait until the day the assignment is due to locate a printer.

Read chapters 6 and 7 of The Great Gatsby for Friday, 26 October.

Please bring your Language of Composition textbook to class on Tuesday, 23 October. We will visit the Bookroom to exchange your text for the "second-edition" for this textbook. Perhaps, you will share my passion for this edition once you begin "flipping" through the pages.

Monday, 22 October through Wednesday, 24 October: The Synthesis Essay continued...

Thursday, 25 October: Bring your "new" textbook to class.

Friday, 26 October: Diedrich is pleased to inform you that all of his AP classes are meeting today!
His classes will take a practice AP Style MC test as a class-not independently, not in a group, but rather as a class with Diedrich guiding you through the 'thinking" strategies for the selection of a choice.

Help me solve an enigma...Why aren't there more students visiting me during 37.5 minutes to discuss assignments before it is due as well as after the grade for the assignment has been posted. I welcome all students-many do come to 404 for assistance-sadly, those not doing well have not...

Please be advised that soon-beginning this week-you will no longer have several days to complete an assignment!

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Schedule for Week of 15 October

NOTE: Too many students are NOT adhering to Diedrich's "48 Hour Rule." If you miss a class activity and /or an assessment, you have two school days to make-it up during 37.5 minutes (even if your class does not meet on that day). Unspun...Text Annotations
Realizing-that for many students-the task of annotating may not have been required previously-I was "generous" in the awarding of the grade. However, it soon became obvious that students did not refer to Adler's How to Mark a Book nor to the suggestions provided  for the completion of this activity. Furthermore, I indicated that the book would be "collected and evaluated" (words were in bold print). For those individuals who downloaded the text on a "tablet", you are to report to me during 37 1/2 minutes with your device...
(Jupiter grade percentages/calculations will be "re-adjusted" since this assignment was in essence a project.) A "separate" grade for chapter outlines/notes will be entered, accordingly.
Just in case you were wondering why I took so long to enter the grade for your Introductory Letter Assignment:  Prior to reading your letter, I wanted  get to know you first-sitting in my classroom-during our first-week of the semester -although, I do have to admit that I would  glance at the seating chart as I began to read your letter-to visualize who had written the letter.

Many of you have shared similar concerns and I will address these in class.
Schedule for Week of 17 September:

If you did not turn-in the Introductory Letter Homework Assignment, I will accept the late submission ONLY if it is completed during 37 1/2 minutes in Room 404 during my supervision.

Weekly Vocabulary Quizzes

ATTENTION AP STUDENTS FOR THE 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR

SAT VOCABULARY QUIZZES

Beginning with our second week of school, you will take a Vocabulary Quiz. For our first quiz (List 1), you will study all THIRTY words on this list-but you will be tested on only TEN of the words. (TEST FORMAT: MATCHING) However, for your second Vocabulary Quiz you will study ALL of the words for List 2-but you will only be tested on SEVEN of the words from that list AND THREE of the words from List 1. Let me clarify-for our THIRD Vocabulary Quiz-you will study ALL of the words for List 3-but you will only be tested on SEVEN of the words from that list and THREE of the words from List 2. We will follow this procedure throughout the year until you are tested on each of the lists which appear when you click on the link above: "SAT VOCABULARY QUIZZES."

I recommend that you make-up Flash-Cards for each list and store them in a shoebox for your review. Furthermore, you probably should download and print these lists and place them in your required three-ring binder for this class.

PLEASE NOTE: THE SAT VOCABULARY QUIZZES WILL HAVE A "WEIGHT" OF 12% FOR EACH MARKING PERIOD WHEN "JUPITER" CALCULATES YOUR GRADE.

One Look Dictionary will provide assistance with the pronunciation of the words-you will "hear" how a specific word is pronounced. (Click on "one look.")

AP Scores: I received notification from the College Board that grades will be released "gradually" according to regions throughout the US and throughout the world.  Scores for the "Eastern Region" will be released sometime during the afternoon on 5 July. Perhaps, you will have access to your score at that time as well.

AP Scores Access Schedule

Monday, June 25, 2012

Dear Parents: On Wednesday, 27 June-your child will receive his/her report card. Please note that your child's final grade in this class "could" be raised if your child received a "4" or a "5" on the AP English Language and Composition Examination. However, there are several exceptions to this: students excessively absent and/or late-students who habitually turned-in late homework assignments (completed during 37 1/2 minutes)-students who were insubordinate throughout the year will not receive this grade change increase. I have reminded students about this throughout the ENTIRE year!

I usually receive the grade report by the end of the first week in July.

Please remind your child to return ALL textbooks to the school on Wednesday, 27 June.

STUDENTS: Please pick-up your loose-leaf binder in Room 404. I do not have the storage-space available to keep it until September!

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Be Advised: I have updated the results of three assignments on Jupiter (Patrick Henry, Murrow Speech, and the Annotations for the Murrow speech). Dear Parents: I have repeatedly reminded your child that the assignments missing can ONLY be made-up during the designated 37 1/2 minute tutoring sessions. Furthermore, I have even indicated that I would even stay late on Friday to accommodate your child's schedule. Kindly urge your child to take advantage of the opportunity to change their "0" to a passing grade.
TIME IS RUNNING OUT-THE CUT-OFF DATE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY IS WEDNESDAY, 6 JUNE 2012!

Friday, May 25, 2012

Schedule for Week of 28 May:

For Tuesday, 29 May: ALL BANDS: Read Roads to Destiny (see link for story below) FOCUS: Existentialism I suggest you download and print a copy of this story if possible-annotate and write notes in the margins. This will facilitate discussion. Be advised that I directed you to this story approximately ten days ago. By Now everyone should have turned-in the Dialectical Journals for Chapters 7/8 and 9/10. If you have not done so, you must hand me this assignment as you enter the classroom on Tuesday-DO NOT EMAIL ME THIS ASSIGNMENT AND DO NOT PLACE THIS ASSIGNMENT IN MY MAILBOX.

You must bring your textbook to class on Tuesday for collection and you must bring TEWWG novel to class on Tuesday for collection also!

WOW! You have completed the AP English Language and Composition Examination and have earned a 4 or a 5! Too bad your morning had to begin the way it did. As I typed this statement, I realized that your experience this morning is related to our next topic/lesson/writing assignment. Included below is a link to the short story you will be assigned after the watching of a film related to our next unit of study.

Roads of Destiny  O' Henry

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday! Please keep in mind that the semester is not over...
